DebConf 2022 in Prizren, Kosovo - we will be there

DebConf, the Debian developers conference is the yearly conference where contributors of the Debian operating system meet to discuss further development of the system. Besides the scheduled workshops and talks, Debian developers take the opportunity to hack on the Debian system in a more informal setting. This has been institutionalised by introducing the DebCamp in the Oslo DebConf in 2003.

About Debian
Debian also known as Debian GNU/Linux, is a GNU/Linux distribution composed of free and open-source software, developed by the community-supported Debian Project, which was established by Ian Murdock on August 16, 1993. The Debian Stable branch is the most popular edition for personal computers and servers. Debian is also the basis for many other distributions, most notably Ubuntu, which we extensively use to provide our instances. It is notably one of the oldest operating systems based on the Linux kernel. The project is coordinated over the Internet by a team of volunteers guided by the Debian Project Leader and three foundational documents: the Debian Social Contract, the Debian Constitution, and the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

About DebConf 2022
We are quite excited about the 23rd edition of the conference for many reasons. It is the first DebConf we are participating as part of Cloud68.co team. In addition, it is being held in Prizren, Kosovo, a location quite close to where the majority of our team members was based before gradually starting to have a more remote-work approach. Furthermore, we are launching our first campaign that will showcase our approach on how infrastructure should be. More on that soon in a dedicated blog post ;)

Our participation
During our last team meeting we decided to participate and FLOSS projects that we appreciate and Debian is definitely on the list. Even during the peak of the pandemic we did our best to be involved in open source and open knowledge community-driven events with Flash Forward, Open publishing Fest and Open Belgium being only some of the examples, but with more in-person events happening we plan to also travel more to meet again fellow floss contributors from various projects. Due to our relationship and respect to the Debian project and to the DebConf organisers, we decided to engage in more ways than just participating on the conference. More specifically:

  • we became sponsors of the event with a modest contribution;
  • the majority of our team members will travel to Prizren;
  • launch of our first campaign to promote self-hosting;
  • frequent updates from our Mastodon account.
