Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting (FOSDEM) is a non-commercial, volunteer-organized European event with a focus on free and open-source software development. It is aimed at anyone interested in the free and open-source software movement, and to promote the awareness and use of free and open-source software. With more than 4,000 visitors every year by 2011, it is probably the biggest gathering of free open source technologies enthusiasts and professionals in the European continent. FOSDEM is held annually, usually during the first weekend of February, in the southeast of Brussels, Belgium. We are quite excited that after two editions being held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of our favorite FLOSS events returns as an in-person event.

C68 at FOSDEM 2023
Our team members have participated in many editions, but this is the first time that we will join FOSDEM 2023 edition representing Cloud68.co. We’ll have lots of ‘Raise Against’ stickers with us, so don’t hesitate to ask for them. You can even just hang out with us for a coffee, a Belgian waffle or Club Mate.

Boris, one of the C68 co-founders, and myself will have the opportunity to share our approach and proposal on the challenges of providing digital infrastructure in a hassle-free way to small and medium teams interested in moving away from big tech. The presentation title is “Breaking away from Big Tech - Using open source infrastructure in a convenient way”.
Presentation description
While a lot of open source projects should be praised for their commitment to openness, the topic of infrastructure is usually taboo, as many times it ends up that it’s in the hands of Big Tech companies/GAFAM. While the reasoning why small and medium teams do not move away from big (evil) tech platforms can sometimes be convenience, there can be monsters lurking in the shadows. In this presentation we will explore and celebrate the movement of independent, self-governed open source infrastructure providers, recognize some challenges in the path of libre infrastructure, and share how to migrate from tech oligopolies to open source cloud platforms without hassle.
